Aayush, an accountant from India, was referred to me by a friend to explore his pathway to Australian permanent residency. We started with a 20-minute phone consultation, which allowed me to understand his situation and make a preliminary assessment of possible visa options. From this discussion, I identified that the Subclass 186 Direct Entry stream could be a suitable pathway for him.
Before moving forward, I scheduled a one-hour video consultation with Aayush. In preparation for the meeting, I asked him to provide key documents in advance so that I could conduct a preliminary review. This ensured we could make the best use of the one-hour session to:
- Analyse potential risks in his application
- Assess the strengths and weaknesses of his case
- Explain my findings and recommendations in detail during the meeting
Aayush had worked in accounting over the past five years in casual, part-time, and full-time roles. One of the main eligibility requirements for the Subclass 186 visa is three years of relevant work experience. While the Department of Home Affairs allows some flexibility for part-time experience through pro-rata calculations, the consistency of hours in casual roles is also important and subject to the case officer’s discretion.
After reviewing his employment history, I advised Aayush to work an additional two months to confidently meet the three-year work requirement, thereby reducing any risk to his application.
The strategy worked—just five months after lodgement, his visa was granted! ✅
